Historical tools, barrels, presses, and bottles

Discover the tools that Istrian winemakers used for centuries. From old wooden presses to clay amphorae and glass bottles, every item tells a story. These objects show how wine was made before machines — with hands, tradition, and local knowledge.

Full Story: Wine Tools Through Time

In the past, making wine in Istria was all about simple but smart tools. Grapes were crushed in stone basins or with wooden beams, and the juice was stored in clay jars or wooden barrels made by local craftsmen. These tools weren’t fancy, but they worked — and many were used for generations.

Later came screw presses, glass bottles, and corkers, still made and used by hand. Some bottles even had marks showing which village or family they came from.

Each tool in the museum shows how Istrian people used what they had — wood, stone, iron — to turn grapes into wine. Today, they remind us of a time when every part of the winemaking process was done with care and tradition.
